Additional Information
The Clothiers' Arms stood at the end of a line of buildings opposite the junction of Bradley Street and Kirkgate. The Clothiers' Arms Yard was entered near this junction. The properties concerned were at the back of the yard and probably dated from a time before regulation when property holders tried to occupy every piece of their property profitably. This led to overcrowding and nuisances. The conversion of these back to backs to what was described as the 'flat system' reflects the interest in the provision of tenement properties to meet the housing needs of working people. Nearby the Ramsden Tenements had been completed and the Corporation itself was to embark on three blocks of tenement buildings designed by the Borough Engineer, K. F. Campbell.
